earache : band of the month magnet school
sxsw recap : thursday, 13th march 08
in hopes of revitalizing part of the sxsw music festival
with some independent spirit; tricycle records, three
ring records, and the bay bridged presented brought
the bay area take over to the beauty bar. we, regretfully
missed several of the opening bands, we really wanted
to see scrabbel...but couldn't make it there in time. the
blacks were playing as we entered, so i made sure our
son's tiny earplugs were snug in ears and he was safe
with daddy and friends and went to the side of the stage
to hear this band a bit louder. i quickly found myself
nodding along to their unfamiliar tunes and promptly
snapping away. her guitar was more on the rock side, yet
the drums and percussion were peppy at times. you should
check out 'raincoat' and 'the split' on their myspace page
to hear what i'm talking about. they are solid, fun, and hip
(without the hip attitude.) von iva played next, and for me,
they were a lead vocalist who sings her ass off, a drummer
who won't stop drumming even if her drums are tumbling
over, and a sexy lady playing some cool keys. a few friends
had already caught an earlier sxsw show of theirs and made
it out to the bay area take over to see them again. last up,
were the two gallants. i had to take a baby break, so i didn't
get to see much of their set. however, they were very loud,
so i heard every song clearly from the outside. they sure are
loud. heh. check out their myspace page and have a listen
and if you're in the uk area, put in your earplugs and enjoy!
"put in your your earplugs," i'm such a mom, now.

since we had seen out of town bands during the day,
we decided that it was important to support our friends
in the austin band, magnet school . we headed to the
open-top light bar to see their show. what happened to
them was nothing other than bullshit. they began their
set and though they sounded remarkable, we were a
tad busy trying to get part of our non-credentialed
group in the door! we were told that the show was
sold-out. the place was half empty, half full, whatever
you want to call it. it was by no means sold-out and the
fans who wanted to show their support to the band were
actually turned away. extremely frustrated...i stayed to
take some photos, but after just a few songs they were
shut down by the noise police. the city of austin sent an
associate to the light bar with a debbie-downer-decibel
-meter and shut the band down. who booked
magnet
school ,
tia carrera and amplified
heat at the light
bar anyway? we went home shortly after that…
sxsw recap : wednesday, 12th march 08
we thought we'd start off sxsw at the domino showcase.
we were running a little bit late due to traffic and parking,
but thought we'd make it in time to see these new puritans.
we arrived (a little out of breath,) at the antone's doors
only to find out that there wasn't a guest list for domino
recording co. there was no guest list for domino recording
co. at the domino recording co. showcase? one may argue
that sxsw is not really known for guests lists at many
showcases, however, antone's did have a photographer
guest list for the event, so those champs got in just fine.
that was kind of bizarre. since when is there such a thing
as a photographer guest list, anyway? (i digress.) we were
put on the 'lost list' because we knew even with wristbands
or badges, there was still a good chance that we would not
get in. sadly, we weren't the only ones. domino reps stood
in front of the venue with boxes of cds under their arms in
disbelief and called and sent texts to anyone and everyone.
though they had badges around their necks that read 'domino
recording company,' their efforts at the door and mass
communication with other reps within their organization did
not pay off. as dom reps were headed to the nearest bar,
white willams approached the door and was told he was not
allowed in the venue. he exclaimed 'but i'm performing here
at one a.m.!' the super-friendly door lady said 'well, that's
too bad you shouldn't have left! you will have to wait in line.'
he then said 'i have thousands of dollars of equipment inside,
i need to get in there!' he, was eventually given the go-ahead.
surely they didn't want to their piss off their final performer
too much! that may seriously jeopardize sales at the bar, no?
is it just me, or…wasn't clifford antone all about the music
and not about grumpy old aged volunteers working the doors
of his venue that are drunk with doorman/woman power?
checking i.d.'s, wristbands and badges at the front door of
a venue…oh my, that's some seriously powerful stuff, no doubt!
we left antone's with vodka in mind, so we stopped at canvas.
we had never been there before, had no idea what it was like,
but the service was cool and we were able to regroup. well…
mostly…is that place a swingers bar? we quickly moved on
to emo's and thankfully got there early enough to get in. we
were immediately focused on be your own pet. i had not
heard them before, but must say that they are nothing less
than wild and without a doubt, captivated just about every-
one there while they were performing. (see image below!)
up next were autolux. every opportunity i've had to see
them in the past - i've missed them, so it was a pleasure to
hear them live. they are raw indie rock and their dark and
whirly guitars will - without a doubt - satisfy your shoegaze-y
appetites. their show was the perfect way to bring our first
night of the festival to an early close and was the ideal band
to snap us back into sxsw-mode and get us refocused on
what part of the festival is about...m-u-s-i-c. if you haven't
heard or seen them before, you should head to coachella in
april. the line up is looking quite nice!
